The Rose Bowl Game was first played on January 1, 1902, and was the first ever postseason college football game. Those is attendance that day saw Michigan defeat Stanford 49-0. The second football contest at the Rose Bowl was not played until 1916, the time in between football was replaced with Roman-style chariot races. In 1946 the agreement was made to make the Rose Bowl a contest between the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences and is the longest standing agreement of its kind in college football. The Rose Bowl itself was constructed in 1922 to host the Tournament of Roses, prior to that, the game was played in Tournament Park. The USC Trojans have more Rose Bowl Game victories than any other with 24 wins in 33 appearances. Although Miami, Duke, Pitt, and Georgia Tech have played in the Rose Bowl, the ACC has only played in the Rose Bowl once in its history -- ACC Championship Game winner Florida State in 2015. The other four were members of other conferences at the time. In both 2002 and 2006 the Rose Bowl served as the BCS National Championship game, and it is currently part of the College Football Playoff rotation every three years. Being the original college football bowl game and being steeped in such tradition and excellence, the Rose Bowl Game is commonly referred to as “The Granddaddy of them all”. And in case you were wondering, the 'Run for the Roses' refers to the famed Kentucky Derby and has nothing to do with a historic touchdown sprint in the bowl game. Good try though.

The Rose Bowl Stadium, designed by Myron Hunt, was completed in 1922. Originally constructed for the Rose Bowl Game, the venue has grown into a California landmark and has hosted many different events. The stadium was used to hold cycling races during the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984. Outside of college football, the Rose Bowl has hosted five Super Bowls, the second most of any Super Bowl venue. Other major events held at the Rose Bowl include: the 1994 World Cup Finals, the 1999 Women’s World Cup Finals, the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal Match, and many CONCACAF matches over the years. The Rose Bowl Stadium has also hosted the college football national championship game and multiple College Football Playoff semifinal games.
