Opened in 1969 on the site of the former Anniston Air Force Base, Talladega Superspeedway is the site of NASCAR Cup Series races each year. “The Big one” is the longest track in NASCAR at 2.66 miles and produces some of the fastest racing speeds all season. Rusty Wallace set a NASCAR vehicle record time by circling the closed oval course at over 216 miles per hour on June 9, 2004. Due to such high speeds, NASCAR forces drivers to use restrictor plates during races at Talladega to prevent dangerous crashes. Outside of great racing, Talladega Superspeedway is known for unusual events. In one instance, Bobby Isaac left in the middle of a race claiming that a voice had told him to quit. This story, along with others and a long list of deadly crashes, have led many NASCAR fans and Alabama residents to believe that Talladega is cursed. In 2010 a short film called The Legend of Hallowdega was released to describe the “Talladega Jinx”. The Earnhardt family beat the curse though, with Dale Sr. having ten career wins at Talladega, the most by any driver and Dale Jr. having the most consecutive wins with four. The track has become a cultural landmark in the south and has been featured in film, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and music, “Talladega” by Eric Church.
