One of NASCAR’s charter members, Martinsville Speedway originally opened on July 6th, 1947, drawing a crowd of over 6,000 for its first race. At a racing distance of .52 miles, Martinsville Speedway is the shortest track on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule. The speedway has maintained its original configuration for almost 70 years, with the only change being from a dirt track to a paved track in 1955. No driver has performed at Martinsville Speedway as well as Richard Petty. Petty holds the record for wins (15), top five finishes (30), top ten finishes (37), starts (67), and most laps completed, having completed the half mile loop nearly 28,000 times. Currently, Martinsville Speedway is host to two NASCAR Cup Series races: the Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 400 and the Xfinity 500, which is part of the NASCAR Cup Playoffs.
