Darlington Raceway is the original paved speedway on the NASCAR schedule. Known for its unique egg shaped one and a quarter mile track, Darlington is often referred to as “the track too tough to tame”. Established in 1950 by South Carolina businessman Harold Brasington, the raceway held its first race on Labor Day and drew a crowd of over 25,000 fans. Since then “The Lady in Black” has become a legendary location for race fans and drivers alike. David Pearson figured out the egg shaped track better than any other driver and has 10 career victories at Darlington. Richard Petty has also seen success in South Carolina with 25 top 5 finishes. Also located near the track is the Darlington Raceway museum which is home to National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame and focuses on the history of stock car racing.
