Indianapolis 500 History

In 1906 Indianapolis car dealer, Carl Fisher, sought to create a track that could be used to test the top speeds of new car models. Fisher’s vision resulted in the construction of Indianapolis Motor Speedway. After a few years of holding multiple short races to showcase new car models, Fisher and company decided to focus in on one long race per year in order to generate more publicity and on May 30, 1911 the Indianapolis 500 was born. Ray Harroun won the first race in his single seater Marmon Wasp at an average speed of 74.59 mph. Today, race winners average 166.634 mph and finish the 500-mile race in approximately three hours. A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr., and Rick Mears have seen the most success in the “Indy 500” each having four victories. Helio Castroneves leads all current competitors with three victories of his own. The '16 race was the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 and delivered a memorable centennial celebration as rookie driver Alexander Rossi took the win by a margin of +4.4975 despite running out of gas in the final turn after electing not to pit when other drivers did. The race has taken place on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend each year since 1976. In addition to the prize money the winner of the Indy 500 has been given a bottle of milk since 1936, today’s winner are offered a choice between 2% and skim.
