History of the Frozen Four

The first NCAA Hockey Tournament was held in 1948 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In the inaugural game Michigan defeated Dartmouth 8-4 to become the first Men’s Ice Hockey National Champions. The phrase Frozen Four refers to the weekend of semifinal games and the national championship game. When the tournament began the Frozen Four were the only four team in the tournament, but over the years the field expanded reaching a field of 16 in 2003. Michigan has won the most National Championships in Men’s Ice Hockey with 9 titles spanning from 1948-1998 including three consecutive National Championships from 1951-1953. North Dakota has also seen great success, holding 8 National Championship titles, including the '16 victory by 5-1 over Quinnnipac. Boston College has the most appearances, and while Harvard is up there as well, the Allston-Brighton Derby opponents have never met in the Frozen Four.
