History of the Southern 500

The Southern 500 was originally run during Labor Day Weekend in 1950. At the time the Southern 500 was the longest race in NASCAR and the first 500 mile race. In 2005, the race was moved from its traditional fall date to Mother’s Day, but returned to Labor Day Weekend in '15. Jeff Gordon has seen the most success in the Southern 500 having 6 career victories, including consecutive wins from 1995-1998. Gordon’s 1997 win at the Southern 500 was the clinching victory for his Winston Million. Cale Yarborough is the next closest driver at the Southern 500, finding victory lane 5 times over 24 years of racing at Darlington Raceway. In '15 the race experimented with a new rules package that allowed less downforce on the car which resulted in a record 18 caution flags. Carl Edwards was the fastest surviving driver and came away with second victory of that year.
